
Why we use shortwave IR for those freezing dressing rooms
Ever stepped out of a shower into a bathroom dressing area and felt that immediate, bone-chilling draft? It’s the worst. Between the humidity and the heat escaping, those rooms stay cold. We solve this with shortwave infrared (IR). Most heaters just try to warm up the air, which is a losing battle because the heat just floats up to the ceiling. IR is different. It works more like sunlight. It doesn’t bother with the air; it just beams energy straight to your skin or the mirror. You flip a switch, and you’re warm.Right now.
The nitty-gritty of how it works
Since shortwave IR travels in a straight line, it doesn’t stop until it hits something solid. When we wire these units up, the heat hits you immediately. No waiting around for a room to “warm up.” To make this happen, we use high-purity quartz glass tubes. We use quartz because it can handle the sudden, intense heat spike when the lamp kicks on without cracking. And the mirrors? We focus the heat right on the glass to keep it warm enough that the Mirror never fogs up. It’s a small detail, but it makes a huge difference when you’re actually using the room.
The build
We keep things simple. Depending on the size of the unit, we use standard R7s or SK15 connectors. We do this so that if a tube eventually burns out, you can just pop a new one in without needing a degree in engineering. We also fill them with halogen gas. It helps the filament last longer and keeps the heat steady so it doesn’t flicker or fade.
The tricky part
Now, there is a catch. High-wattage IR lamps put out a lot of heat. If you mount the lamp too close to where someone is standing, it’s not “cozy”—it’s uncomfortable. It creates a “hot spot.” That’s why we spend so much time obsessing over the mounting distance and the angle of the reflector. We want the warmth to spread out evenly across the whole area, not just blast one person in the face. Plus, we make sure there’s plenty of ventilation. If the housing can’t breathe, it’ll overheat, and nobody wants that.
