
Getting Your SWIR Tubes to Play Nice With Your Voltage
Here is the thing about short wave infrared (SWIR) tubes: on paper, everything looks standard. Most lamps you find off the shelf are built for 230V. But if you’ve ever spent a day on a real shop floor, you know that “standard” doesn’t really exist. Depending on where your gear is sitting, you’re probably dealing with 110V in the States, 480V in a heavy-duty US plant, or maybe 575V if you’re running a Canadian grid.
Why the voltage actually matters
It’s not just about making sure the plug fits. Voltage changes everything about how the lamp behaves. When we build a tube for 480V or 575V, we’re essentially lowering the current for that same amount of power. Why do we do that? Because it’s easier on your wiring. Your switchgear doesn’t have to sweat as much. If you get this wrong, it’s a disaster. The lamp will either pop the second you flip the switch or it’ll just sit there, lukewarm, never hitting the temperature you need to actually get the job done. To stop that from happening, we tweak the length and thickness of the filament. That way, you get the same punch of heat regardless of what’s coming out of the wall.
Fitting them in
We use quartz glass because these things go through some serious thermal shock. It’s tough. Most of our tubes use R7s or Sk15 connectors. We do this so you can just swap them in. No need to tear apart your lamp holders or spend a weekend redesigning your wiring. You just pop the old one out and slide the new one in. Simple.
The one big catch
High-voltage tubes are beasts. They deliver an incredible amount of heat density, which is a dream if you’re doing PET blowing or curing and need those cycle times to be lightning-fast. But there’s a trade-off. All that heat has to go somewhere. If you crank up the wattage but your cooling fans are old or your ventilation is weak, you’re going to fry your controllers. It’s a quick way to turn an expensive machine into a very large paperweight. Before you scale up, take a look at your airflow. Make sure your cabinet can actually breathe.
