
Getting IR Heating Right for Glass Silk-Screening
When you’re trying to temper glass right after silk-screening, it’s all about the thermal balance. It’s a bit of a tightrope walk. If you crank the heat too fast, your ink starts to bleed and your crisp patterns turn into a blur. But if you’re too cautious and heat it too slowly? You’re left with residual stress in the glass. That’s a nightmare because it leads to those random, spontaneous fractures later on. We’ve found that short-wave infrared (IR) lamps are the way to go. They hit that sweet spot where the pattern stays sharp and the glass stays strong. Keeping the patterns crisp The trick is hitting the annealing point without frying the ink on the surface. Short-wave IR is great because it actually sinks deep into the glass rather than just sitting on top. This lets us push heat into the core to get rid of that internal stress, while the surface stays cool enough that the ink doesn’t degrade. You just have to play around with the lamp wattage and how fast the conveyor is moving until the heat soak feels uniform. The battle between speed and quality It’s tempting to blast the heat to get more pieces through the line. But that’s how you “burn” a print. To stop that, we tweak the distance between the lamps and the glass, and we use pulsed power cycles. By controlling exactly how long the glass sits under the IR array, we can make sure the material is stable and stress-free without the ink migrating or changing color. The messy reality of the hardware Here is the thing: high-wattage IR arrays give you the punch you need for thick glass, but they put off a massive amount of heat. If your cooling fans and exhaust hoods aren’t up to the task, things go south quickly. I’ve seen lamp housings warp and electrical connectors just give up. And be careful about trying to cheat the cycle time by pushing the wattage too high. You might actually create new thermal stresses during the cooling phase. The ramp-down is just as important as the heat-up. If you don’t cool it precisely, the glass will crack. Simple as that.
