
Stop the Chipping: A Better Way to Cut Quartz Glass
Anyone who’s spent time cutting quartz glass knows the frustration. You make your score, you go to break it, and—snap—the crack jumps the line. You end up with those jagged edges or a nasty corner breakout that ruins the whole piece. It’s a total headache. The problem is that cold quartz is just too stubborn. It’s brittle and full of internal stress. When the cutting wheel hits it, the material doesn’t want to cooperate; it just shatters. Here is how we fix that:infrared preheating. Basically, we warm up the glass before the blade ever touches it. We aren’t talking about melting the quartz—that would be a disaster. We’re just nudging the temperature up. This relaxes the surface tension and makes the glass a bit more “forgiving.” When you score preheated glass, the crack stays exactly where it’s supposed to. It follows the line. No jumping, no jagged edges, and way less waste. Why we use IR lamps We went with short-wave infrared lamps because they get the job done fast. If you use a big convection oven, you’re wasting a ton of time and energy just heating up the air around the glass. IR lamps are different. They shoot energy directly into the quartz. It’s quick. It’s efficient. And because the setup is compact, you can just slide the heating stage right into your existing conveyor line without taking over your entire shop floor. The tricky part Now, you can’t just crank the heat to max and call it a day. If the lamps are too hot or sitting too close to the glass, you’ll actually create new stress. That’s a recipe for the glass cracking while it cools down. It’s a balancing act. You have to get the belt speed and the lamp distance just right so the heat is even across the whole sheet. Plus, those lamps put off a lot of heat. If you don’t have a solid cooling system in place, that heat bleed can actually warp your cutting head components. Get the balance right, though, and the results are night and day. Your edges stay clean, your scrap pile shrinks, and the whole process just feels… smoother.
